More photos from the Prairie
This was taken near the entrance of Tall Grass Prairie hence the wall and part of the fence.
Ah look it’s that tree again…apparently this is a better shot of it than the other ones that I put up earlier.
Hey wait it’s that lake…just from a different angle…? Oh no everything is starting to look the same!
Ah the bison…what would I do without these photos…they better print correctly…look at those horns…I could have stayed away, but nope had to get these shots.
There are so many bison….good thing they really didn’t care that we were there…oh wait they probably did.
Hiking Through Tall Grass Prairie
So this weekend was a long one, I went on an “unofficial” photography trip with teachers and other students. For the most part the students were made up of freshmen and sophomores. Of course I’m a senior so I kind of felt a bit out of place. Ah oh well no matter. On Saturday we went to Tall Grass Prairie National Preserve in Kansas (more info can be found here http://www.nps.gov/tapr/index.htm ) and hiked for four hours. It was windy, cold and absolutely one of the best trips I’ve been on in quite some time. Especially after the trip last spring break. I hope to have more photos up from that leg of the trip later.
This tree was the first fascinating object on the long trek through the park.
Again this tree was really the only fascinating thing that any of us saw near the beginning.
Right before leaving Windmill Pasture I caught a glimpse of the sun shining down over the lake and shot this. It had been dreary all day so the sun was a nice change.
After falling behind the group with two other students one spotted bison and we started shooting. At the time they were on the move so we stayed back until I made the move to get closer, we got within a few hundred feet of them before my hat flew off and I got some unfriendly stares from the bison in the middle. We proceeded to leave the bison as they were and get out of the immediate area.
This one was shot in Windmill Pasture on our way back from the place we eventually turned around, it was getting a bit colder by this time. So as soon as we left the Prairie we headed off to Junction City where we spent the night and ate at a buffet. At the buffet my traveling partner Jennifer and I had a crumpled napkin thrown at us by the professors causing us to go into revenge mode and tell the waiter that it was one of their birthdays and that he would never admit to it. So the waiter did so and the professor told everyone that we were never graduating, while another told Jennifer that she had done well to prank him.
We were going to go out and do some star shots, but because of the weather we all turned in for the night.
Unfortunately it was daylight savings time and the hotel owner didn’t seem to remember to change the clocks so our wake up call which was to be at 6 was at 7. Fortunately we woke up by 6:30 and were out the door by 7. We ended up stealing food from the hotel our professors were staying. We were the last ones to arrive and Tom the one we pranked joked that they had a birthday celebration and we had missed it.
Soon after we left for Konza Prairie, where we immediately saw deer and turkey crossing the road, many of us did not have cameras out, so I did not get any photographs of this.
Oh look the prairie looks about the same as the other one.
There was a grove of trees around the river and I found a bird! Actually it kept evading me and the other girls who saw it, but we finally got some shots.
One of the trees was covered in scary spiky vines as well as regular vines.
I think the colors on the vines are awesome.
This is a view from what I believe is the highest point in the prairie.
At long last Jennifer and I went to escape the prairie and met up with the teachers and headed to lunch in Manhattan, Kansas. We ate at a little bistro in town then went to a small park then headed off to Missouri. I ended up back in St. Louis around 8pm ending my weekend long trip.
